On a sunny Friday afternoon we head off into the Wood Lake entry point on the Fernberg Road. Our goal for the evening is to set up camp in Hoist Bay which is on the South side of Basswood lake. This is BWCACAST’s first winter camping trip. We have a canvas tent and a titanium stove for our shelter. With our sleds loaded up with warm gear we trudge across frozen lakes and snow covered portages into the night.
The temperatures were quite comfortable with forecasts of high 30s to low 40s. We caught a glimps of a lone wolf lurking along the edge of Wood Lake right at dusk. We hiked on following fresh wolf tracks all the way to Good Lake where we set up camp for the evening.

I want to do that! That little stove looks really cool! How much weight do you think you all carried in, and were those just your basic molded sled? How did you rig up the harness contraption.

Is that a snow trekker tent? Looks really roomy inside. How come ya’ll couldnt get the fire going? That would have really made it nice, pull up a chair and read a good book. Did ya’ll stay just 1 night or several?

HI Riverrat,
The tent we were using was made by Snow Trekker Tents out of Wisconsin. They are partners with Empire Canvas Works. It is a very nice tent and very easy to set up. The reason we didn’t get a fire going is because we didn’t get to camp until after midnight. Between the darkness of the night and the amount of energy we had left we were unable to find wood that was dry enough to get a fire going for us. The next morning when were were rejuvenated we found some dry wood and got a nice fire going. This was nice to get our gear dried out and ready to go for another day. This was just part one of the trip. We will have one or two more episodes about the rest of our two night trip.

Another great episode, Bill! Winter camping looks like a blast…..got to try it sometime! I especially liked the time lapse of setting up the tent. Looking forward to part two!

Hi Pat,
I wish we had arrived in the daylight so we could have shown the set up a little better. The tent really is amazing. Very easy to set up and with the stove in there you can stay dry and warm. Takes winter camping to a whole new level. Don’t know about cold camping anymore.
