Mudro to Fourtown

by Bill

We start our third trip of the summer into the Mudro Lake entry point.  My parents have joined us for this trip making this a very special time for me to show off the BWCAW.  You’ll see some nice paddling and portaging along with my thoughts on the the DululthPack Northwoods pack.  Join us on our journey.

    What a great Christmas present! I’m ready to go back again! I’ve said it before. That trip was one of the highlights for me in 2009.Thanks so much for keeping the programs coming!

    Love

    Wow. That looks like a wonderful trip. Then again, isn’t every trip wonderful in it’s own way?

    This just reminds me that I need to get back sooner rather than later. Perfect for a cold December day.

    BTW: Are you able to lend any insight into what audio/video gear you take with you? HD Camcorder, GPS, mounts, tripods, laptop(?), solar chargers, and other stuff like that? It must add a lot of weight and portage time, I would guess.

    Thanks in advance!

    @Christopher:

    Hi Christopher,

    Thanks for commenting. We do enjoy every trip we go on. Even when we travel over the same area there is always something new to see. I’m really hoping to get out winter camping again this year. I’m just in need of a good winter tent. We’ll see if I can figure something out.

    As for the gear we bring with us… We try to keep things to a minimum. We don’t want to become a big production out in the wilderness for two reasons. One, we don’t want to disturb any of the other people that are out enjoying nature, and two we don’t want our experience to be hindered by the making of the shows.
    So here is what we bring for filming.
    Canon HV 30 Video Camera
    Velbon Tripod
    4 long life batteries for HV 30
    Panasonic MiniDV tapes roughly 2 per day. (We use panasonic tapes because they are lubricant free which can cause the video camera to gum up
    Rode VideoMice
    4 sheets of computer paper in zip lock bag for white balancing
    Dead Cat wind screen for microphone
    Rain Coat for HV30. (Brand escapes my mind at the moment)
    Canon D10 still camera. (water proof, drop proof, and “freeze proof”
    Fellow campers that don’t mind waiting around for me to get shots and are willing to paddle back to pick up camera so we can show us coming into or leaving a portage.
    All of the above minus the tripod and Canon D10 fit into one small pelican case so if it gets really nasty out the gear will live to shoot another day.

    Hi Bill, Nice video! I’ve been hiking/backpacking so much lately with this nice winter weather we have down here in Ga. that I haven’t been taking the time to catch up on your videos. But its always great to watch your wanderings throughout the Boundary Waters. I’ve been hiking the Pinhoti Trail in Alabama a bit here lately enjoying the expansive scenery without the leaves on the trees to hinder the views. I’m still pondering and scheming ways to work here in the winter and play in the BWCAW in the summertime. As much as I enjoy backpacking, I’d rather be canoeing. Then I could get the best of both activities between paddling and portaging. Thanks for the time all of you invest to keep this site running to bring the best of the Boundary Waters to those of us who cant be there, It is appreciated very much! I learn a lot and enjoy the scenery and your choice in music very much. Have a great week Bill, Sincerely, Tony & Kat

    Hi Bill-

    Thanks for taking the time to list all of your gear. I have a handle on much of this but completely forgot about the Pelican case. Excellent idea! I hadn’t heard about the D10 either.

    Eventually I’d like to get more video for my site, so your list is very helpful. I know I’ll need some quality video once I get by BWCA section up and running. Know of anyone who has some great video I could use? 😉

    I look forward to your next posting and learning more about your trips.

    Thanks again!
    Chris

    @Christopher: HI Chris,

    Thanks for the comment. Glad I could help out a bit with a gear list. I’d like to add a couple more things to enhance the show. We’ll see if I can scrape up some money. 😉

    Let me know when you get a video section going. I’d throw an episode your way every once and a while to help you out.

    Thanks for watching,

    Bill
