Getting into Knife Lake – The Show

by Bill

Its -26 F outside here in Northern Minnesota as I edit this show.  Its nice to remember the hot days paddling in the BWCAW.  This day was especially hot requiring a dip in the lake at most portages.  We paddled and portaged for over 8 hours until we found an open camping site on Knife lake.

The portage leading into Knife lake led us to a nice little set of rapids.  The crystal clear water in Knife was quite refreshing.  We hopped in the water at the end of the portage and let the fast moving water revive us for the next bout of paddling.  It was a good thing too, we were expecting to find a camping site in the next hour or two, but it wasn’t for another 4 hours of paddling that we came across a campsite that wasn’t either taken or surrounded by the scorched land of a previous forest fire.  All in all it was a very nice day out on the water with some spectacular views.

Wow! I’m constantly amazed at the great footage you get on these trips Bill. I really enjoy when Jim shares his knowledge on the history of the area as well. Fascinating! “The Rootbeer Lady”. I’ve got to google her for sure!

I also liked the time lapse on the clouds. Nice touch.

You guys are doing cool stuff. Thanks!

The Knife Lake segment was great! Wow, 27 below…..and I’m complaining about the recent 40s and 50s here in San Diego! Bet you wish you were back in that hot summer weather in BWCA! Strange how we yearn for hot summer days gone by when we are in the depths of winter and visa versa! At least thats the way it always was for me in Alaska.

Keep those segments coming! How about a winter expedition to BWCA, just to show what it looks like locked in snow and ice?! Still have your cross country skis from Alaska? Oh, o.k……we’ll let you wait ’til February or March!

Have a merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and productive 2009!

    Pat

It’s rainy and cold here in Phoenix today, so I decided to brighten my spirits by coming back to your site for some uplifting footage of the best scenery and weather in the world. The scenes found in this clip were doing the trick until I had to cover my eyes when that shirtless guy appeared in the rapids!
