We woke on our second day of winter camping to sunny skies and warm weather. It was a great day to be out exploring around Hoist Bay on Basswood Lake. We set off in search of firewood and a little exercise. Along the way we encountered dog teams out on a run and talk about how this bay was used back in the logging days.
We also talk about how we set up our camp with our canvas tent and titanium wood stove as well as that basics of filtering water in the winter. Join us on day two of our winter camping trip into Basswood Lake.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for commenting. We love using your music. It fits so nicely with our scenic video. I hope your next album is coming along well. We’d love to use it on future shows. I continue to look for new music, but I keep gravitating back to you. Thanks for sharing your talent with us here at BWCACAST.
Excellent show Bill. You’re getting really good at shooting from a variety of perspectives. Love that. I like how you give tips on various aspects of the winter camping experience. Wish I were there! Looks like so much fun, and you don’t even have to worry about getting cold.
Great job.

Interesting show bill. Down here in the south the coldest it gets is between 5-12 degrees F, so a canvas tent would be overkill for sure and definitely too heavy to tote in a backpack. I’ve got a -15F mountain hardwear expandable sleeping bag which makes it comfortable anywhere between -15F and 40F. So if its really chilly and I’m in the tent, then I’m in the bag. That stove would make it really nice though as cold as it gets in Minnesota. You could actually sit back and read a good book without shivering after eating a hot bowl of chili in the comfort of your heated tent. I wished we had a more varied season changes down here, it must be really neat to do different things based on the seasons, keeps camping interesting. Great show Bill. Tony
@riverrat: Hi Tony,
I imagine you’d get a little warm in a canvas tent living in the south. You are right, they are pretty heavy, especially after a day or two of use. The moisture from your breathing soaks up in the canvas adding a considerable amount of weight. The only way we are able to take it with us on a trip is by using sleds. Its amazing how differently you pack for a winter trip with a sled vs. a hiking or even canoeing trip. The sleds allow you to haul a lot of weight pretty easily. We brought a cast iron skillet with for crying out loud. Something I’d never even consider if I had to carry that on my back.
As for the varied seasons, I was just thinking a couple days ago about how even though summer is nice I’m already looking forward to the fall when it’ll cool down and I can go out on hikes without overheating. Not to mention the winter and how the blanket of snow and the crisp cold on your nose makes the same summer destinations take on a whole new look and experience.
Thanks for commenting… Hope you enjoy our new shows.
